Description

Chipmunks are closely related to squirrels. They will mainly stick to the ground and dig burrows for food storage and shelter. Chipmunks can climb trees and over structures like fences, leading to conflict between the animals and property owners.

Appearance

  • Small animals, measuring about 8 inches and weight just a few ounces
  • Covered in fur, mostly brown in color
  • Prominent features including stripes that appear black, white, and tan
  • White underbellies
  • Cheeks capable of storing large amounts of food or dirt

Habitat

Chipmunks favor woodlands for nesting locations, but are also found darting for cover among suburban and rural environments. Chipmunk burrows are usually situated near small shrubs or manmade structures. When the weather gets cold, the rodents will retreat underground until the warmer weather returns. While underground, chipmunks will feed on the stored food gathered throughout the previous warm months.

Chipmunk Problems

Entry

Chipmunks are occasionally spotted inside of buildings, but do prefer outdoor environments. Chipmunks need things like shrubs and bushes that will provide cover. This cover cannot be typically found inside of homes. Their favored food sources, like seeds, nuts, vegetables, carrion, and small amphibians, will attract the animals to your yard though. Chipmunks will also see pet food as a viable food option for the hungry animals on your property.

Chipmunk Damages

Chipmunks are considered pests due to the damages they cause in your yard and gardens. They will eat flower bulbs, dig for seeds, and consume various vegetables. If the population number is left unchecked, chipmunks can damage structures with their burrowing habits. Foundations, patios, and sidewalks are at risk with a large population problem. Chipmunks are also known to steal bird eggs, negatively impacting local bird populations.
